What Causes Muscular Pain In The Leg After Taking Simvastatin?

Good evening, Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. How common is muscle pain with simvastatin? My mom is 85 and experiencing severe leg pain which she describes as muscular pain. (not in her joints). I just looked up all the side effects of each medication she is on and am wondering if the statin is the culprit. She has been on it for years and is recently having this problem. Thanks. Hi,

Yes muscular pain is a side effect of statin drug. You say she has been on it for many years... in that case I would suggest estimation of her lipid profile & stop the drug if lipids are normal.

Over strain to the muscle & calcium & vitamin D deficiency need to be considered too. Lumber spondylitis could be the cause. Needs to be evaluated if no relief with routine treatment.

Fomentation/application of muscle relaxant ointment over the counter (relaxil) & calcium supplement can be done to give her relief. Consult your treating doctor decide about statin drug/spinal issue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
