Muscle spasm is a side effect of
hydrochlorothiazide. Your blood pressure is very stable now. This is only because of proper medicine and regular treatment. Any interruption or alteration in therapy will destabilize your BP. Muscle spasm is manageable and is not as harmful as unstable BP.
Advice
1. Continue all medicines as suggested by your doctor
2. Do alter dose or drug without your doctor’s permission
3. Do
massage with an over the counter
muscle relaxant cream/ointment
4. You can take
tizanidine for muscle spasm if you do not get relief from cream. This is a prescription based medicine and you need written prescription. Consult your doctor for this
5. Regular exercise at least 30 minutes for 5 days in a week. The best types of exercise for lowering BP include walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing.
6. Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on
saturated fat and cholesterol
7. Consume less salt
8. Avoid smoking, alcohol, coffee and caffeinated beverages
9. Lose extra weight if you are
overweight and keep your
body mass index between 19 and 25. BMI is calculated by formula BMI = Weight in Kilograms / (height in meters x height in meters)
10. Reduce your metal stress because stress activates sympathetic system and increases BP
11. Measure your BP regularly and be in touch with your doctor
12. Investigations
a. Serum potassium
b. Serum calcium
