What Causes Muscle Spasms Under The Rib Cage Upon Coughing?

Ive had a cold with a lot of deep coughing the last 4-5 days. Today when I cough I m getting muscle twinges on the right side of my chest under my rib cage and right shoulder. Should I be concerned that this may be a heart issue or should I just go get some rest and call my doctor on Monday?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, my name is Dr.Dorina Gurabardhi. I understand your concern.
This muscle spasm is also called as muscle fasciculation & appears when the muscle contracts on its own (without nerve stimulation). Most of the times these symptoms occur without any underlying disorder & they are not harmful.
If it continue after the cough have relieved you should consult a neurologist.
Hope my answer was helpful, if you have any other questions I'll be glad to help, thanks!
