What Causes Muscle Atrophy?

I was physical inactive for a few weeks, when I am usually active (lifting weights) Recently I started to lift again, but I was lifting as much as I did before. Is this muscle atrophy and will my muscles by restored to its previous state? Did I lose any muscle? Please explain.
