What Causes Mucus In The Stool?

I am seeing a large amount of mucus in my stool? My stool has hanged over the past month, not diarrheal but looser: I have had constipation my entire life, pooped like a rabbit and now I haven t problem going, stool is soft and firm but on occasion now I only have the mucus with ver little or no stool.
