What Causes Mild Headaches On Withdrawal From Prednisolone?

I have suffered with a severe long term headache since mid june diagnosed as Temporal arteritus and put on 60 mg prednisolone but later tests were negative including a mri scan which only showed a old mini stroke i have recently been in hospital where the consultant wanted to reduce my steroids off very quick but i expressed concerns about doing this so he reduced by 2.5 mg every 5 days 1 was on 22.5 when i went in and came out on 15 the neuro consultant diagnosed a non spacific headache and is treating me with pregablin 125mg twice a day to be raised to 150 just before coming home i had a disagreement with my consultant as he wanted me to come back in 6 weeks after reducing my prednisolone from 15mg to zero by 2.5mg per week i disagreed as my rheumotolgogist said after ten it should be reduced very slowly by 1mg a fortnight are 1mg a month so he has sent me home and left my reducing to my Gp who is taking it slowly cos each time i reduced i get withdrawal pains i have them now and its not good i always have a dull numb ache left side of my head that never goes away its been there since the onset in june the pains were at a level 10plus on the 10 scale at first and they did reduce with the steroids to a 5 /10 but later became spasmodic and at times back to a 10plus and this has carried on especialy each time i reduced the steroids but eventualy became easier but still painful it has been a long hard road i have been on for 10 weeks i was only sleeping 2hours per day and my body was racing and my head was wracked with pain yet i was very fatigued and disorientated and confused my sleep is a lot better now but i still wake at same time 4-5am with my head aching its all left side from temple tomy forehead tobehind my eye which is always sore on awakening but then my eye aches most of day anyway the pain goes into my ear at the moment i stroke my forehead just above my left eye and it causes pain to my temple and ear left side this last reduction of 2.5mg i did a fortnight ago but the withdrawal symptoms are lasting longer the stroking forehead and the pain only happens on reduction in preds and usualy goes in a week but this time it has not moved i hope this is enough information if not fell free to ask

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* The prednisone is suppressing the inflammatory condition of temporal arteritis via its anti inflammatory actions.

* The withdrawal of the prednisone is not the cause of the headache, rather it is the flare of arteritis which gives headache.

However, kindly provide me all details of your reports for further correspondence in this regard.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
