What Causes Mild Chest Pain On Left Side Radiating Towards Arm?

Hi, I am a 24 year old female - no children, no health problems as far as I know and not on any medication. Back in January I started getting a dull aching pain in the left side of my chest around my heart. The pain lasted only an hour or so the first few times but gradually started coming more often and with more intense aching/throbbing pain. The pain spread throughout the left side of my chest, including my armpit/side of breast area as well as my left arm and around the back to my left shoulder. When I m getting the pain it often comes with a choking feeling, shortness of breath and faster heart rate. The area on the side on my breast/armpit is very tender to touch also.I have had an ECG, blood tests and a chest x-ray and they were all clear. What do you think could be causing this? And is there any way I could help the pain go? I have tried paracetamol, ibuprofen and co-codamol but they don t touch the pain.Thank you for your help.

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

The causes of your pain may be the following:
1) Severe muscle strain of chest muscles
2) Angina
3) Myocardial infarction
4) Cervical radiculopathy
5) Cervical disc prolapse leading to pressure on the nerve

Please do consult a physician for detailed clinical examination and the following tests:
1) ECG when the pain is present
2) 2D echocardiography
3) Ultrasound chest
4) X-ray cervical spine
5) If necessary, MRI cervical spine

Only with in person examination and few tests results, we can arrive at a specific diagnosis and appropriate treatment can be initiated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
