What Causes Metallic Taste While On Sulfamethoxazole?

I was on sulfamethoxazole for approx . 2 weeks and finished the pills this past Monday. Does it leave a metallic taste? I appear to have taste of metal and really cannot taste anything I ingest. How long can I expect this lack of taste for any foods?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. Metallic taste is a common side effect of Sulfamethoxazole, especially in males over 60 years of age and most commonly if taken with other medications.
This change in taste is temporary and will go away once you will stop taking the medication. It usually takes from 24 hours up to 5 days for the metallic taste to disappear after stopping the medication.
However, if this continues, you should check with your doctor to see if there are other causes.

I hope this helps.
Wishing you all the best.
