Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have an odd taste in my mouth for the last couple days. Worse today. Almost metallic. The red wine at dinner tonite felt like it was burning my tongue. My whole mouth feels odd. I started taking a new OTC allergy decongestant with diphenhydramine about four days ago. Other than that I can t think of any other changes.
It looks like the metallic taste is due to a side effect of decongestant that you are taking.
Many a time allergy medications cause dry mouth that can also cause altered taste and also inflammation and soreness inside mouth..
So in your case it is appearing to be medication side effect only..
The symptoms will gradually resolve as the medicine intake will be stopped..
As for now to relieve the symptoms you can start gargling with lignocine containing mouthwash to reduce soreness. You can also mark the bad taste with with flavoured mouthwash and chewing gums.. You should do cool water rinses and suck ice pops.. If the symptoms worsen consult your doctor so that he can change the drug or reduce the dose of medication for relief from the symptoms..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
