What Causes Metallic Taste In Mouth While Having Titanium Rods In Neck?

My friend had titanium rods put in his neck a few weeks ago. He is not able to eat because food tastes like metal. Even water tastes really bad. Is this a side effect of the titanium? Or maybe a side effect of the anesthesia or pain meds? He is only taking a low dose of hydrocodone now.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have symptoms of metallic taste in mouth while having titanium rods in neck is mainly not due to titanium poisoning rather it is after effect of antibiotics, pain medication and anesthesia you took and still taking while placement of rods in neck.

Need not to worry about it. It is temporary and will go away soon. Avoid medications which are altering your taste and try another set of medications for pain. Put few drops of sugar along with lemon juice on tongue to rejuvenate taste buds. Maintain oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice daily. Use antimicrobial mouth wash.

Keep drinking lot of fluids. Take Vitamin B12 rich tablets.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
