What Causes Lump Inside Throat And Excess Salivation?

I have what feels like a lump in my throat and I keep trying to cough out the non-existent article . I am awoken in my sleep by this and I am producing a lot of saliva. I don t have a sore throat or a hoarse voice. I am wondering if this is connected to some spray painting I did without a mask which I foolishly did much more of than I intended. I had the same symptoms a few months ago, my GP looked down my throat and told me there was nothing there but it was very perfunctory. I am booked in again on Tuesday and feel I should get a more thorough assessment.

Hi Dear,
Welcome to HCM.
Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query .The symptoms you mention are clearly indicating condition called 'GERD' that is gastrointestinal reflux disease . This condition occur . This is regurgitated gastric contents back to esophagus which are acidic in nature . Due acidity oral cavity produces excess saliva to neutralize acidity.

This acidic gastric content cause rashes in throat which feel like lump . This condition occur due to defect in upper sphincter of esophagus.

I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination by ordering ambulatory acid prob test , endoscopy or X-ray of upper respiratory track to find out the exact cause and to rule out condition like allergy , bruxism or upper respiratory infection.

Doctor may prescribe H2 blockers , proton pump inhibitors or laxatives . For now avoid late night eating specially heavy or spicy food .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
