After a strenuous step exercise class last week, I have noticed a lump in my throat when swallowing , and every so often experiencing small puffs of air coming from my throat( these are different than from an actual breath). What could be causing this ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Lump in the throat is caused by acid reflux, emotional reactions (stress, grief, anxiety, etc.), extreme fatigue or exhaustion, loss of muscle co ordination, etc. You are suggested to get relaxed and come out of stress (physical or emotional), take food in time. In case of acid reflux or gas take antacids and PPIs. Stay well hydrated, take home made food in small amounts multiple times a day. take adequate sleep. Lump in the throat associated with any type of breathing problem is indicative of serious medical conditions (retropharyngeal abscess, epiglottitis, laryngeal cancer, etc.).

Tightness in the throat, breathing problem, anaphylactic shock, panic attacks, sudden severe asthma are medical emergency that need urgent medical aid and treatment. Such emergency need to be treated immediately. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT, get required tests, investigations and imaging tests done. You will be treated accordingly. Your ENT may refer you to a GP if need be.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
