What Causes Lump In Front Of The Ears At Jaw Joint?

Hi, my name is cara and I just noticed a small round lump in front of both ears by the jaw joint while washing my face. The areas are sore to the touch and each have a small swollen line running downward towards my neck. Since noticing the lumps an hour ago the are have begun to ache and swell further though I've noticed no clicking or popping in the joint during the day today. Could this be a TMJD problem or possibly something else?

Hello,
There are a number of possibilities such as ear infection, inflamed muscles, allergy, mumps and various infections. Do you have any recent stress to the TMJ that would cause stress to both sides? Any recent trauma? Do you feel ill with any other respiratory effects or inflamed lymph nodes?
I suggest taking some antiinflammitory. medication such as Tylenol or Motrin. Are there any other conditions or significant medical or dental history to help with a diagnosis?
Schedule a dental exam to evaluate the TMJ especially if you are aware of a clenching habit or grinding at night. Wisdom teeth can become inflamed and cause discomfort in the location you are concerned about. Your dentist will advise you on your wisdom teeth and determine if there are any dental infections contributing to your discomfort. Consider calling your physician for a routine physical and basic blood tests if the condition persists or worsens.
Thank you for your inquiry. I hope you feel better soon.
