What Causes Lower Abdominal Pain When Diagnosed With An Abscess On The Spine?

Brother in nicu at hospital for severe lower tummy pain. Third time in last 3 weeks. 3 CAT scan & MRI today. He s on ventilator to keep his breathing stable. Diagnosed with an abscess on soft tissue between spinal disc. They think he might have sepsis & mentioned sepsis shock. He had tempature, etc. They were going to operate & put cathator on outside but was able to go up the penis prior to surgery in order to drain bladder. CAT scan also showed some kind of small blockage. 8 days of hospital visits, he was treated with pain medication & antibiotics for constipation and sent to rehab unit! Last night pain uncontrollable & now in nicu with ventilator & above diagnosis. How is abcess treated and sepsis treated? He s a diabetic too.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry that your brother is not doing well. An abscess is treated by incision of the abscess and drainage of the pus, this is done along with a course of antibiotics. The issue with your brother would be whether he is well enough to undergo anesthesia to have the abscess drainage. Incision and drainage is the main treatment of an abscess, the pus needs to be gone because the antibiotics are not able to penetrate this discharge effectively.

Sepsis is treated with antibiotics along with other supportive care- fluids, pain medication, control of blood pressure and sugar and any other supportive treatment needed, in his case, he needs assistance breathing. His diabetes would need to be kept in tight control to increase his chance of recovery. Elevated blood sugars can affect healing.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
