What Causes Low Prolactin Level While On Levothyroxine For Hypothyroid?

Hello doctor,I am on cycle day 42 and my period has not arrived.I have got blood hcg test negative and couple of home urine test negative also. This is the first time i have missed a period and we have been trying to conceive for a year now. I am Hypothyroid and have been taking levothyroxine for nearly a year and my TSH last week was 1.3 under control. My doctor requested for a prolactin check yesterday and the value came out 734 in a range of 65-335. Could i be pregnant and that my body is producing low hcg hormone because of the thyroid issue and hence the prolactin is high as well.many thanks in advance.

Hi,

Here pregnancy is out for sure(HCG will be high in pregnancy regardless of thyroid status). Your prolactin level is high. This itself can cause delayed and infrequent periods. Hypothyroidism can cause increased prolactin level, but it is unlikely if TSH was in good control throughout.

We may need further evaluation to find out cause of increased prolactin. A full thyroid profile including free T3 and Free 4 is a good initial step. Your doctor will guide you.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
