What Causes Low Potassium Levels In Body?

I was in the hospital for tests for tests when I was very confused and disoriented. The test showed that my potassium levels were very low; (2.8 mmoi/should be 3.5-5.1 mmoi/L) Is this a condition that can get worst or can be easily treated? I am still confused.

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
Low potassium levels in body is called hypokalemia. It can be due to many causes

1. Urinary potassium loss due to kidney problems & excessive use of diuretics
2. Metabolic Alkalosis can cause transient shifting of potassium into cells
3. Excessive fluid loss such as in diarrhea, severe dehydration etc and low potassium intake can also cause hypokalemia

As you have very low potassium(2.8 mmol), you may require intravenous administration of potassium through drip.

Don't worry you would be fine
Hoping your query is solved.
