What Causes Low Oxygen Levels In Blood While Having Anemia?

My husband, age 77 sleep apnea, type 2 diabetic. High blood pressure. uses a Pap machine got a new one 3 months ago. Last year Dr. discovered he was anemic and very low on blood levels. Had to transfuse & got 4 units of blood. The Drs. cannot find any leeks as yet. The blood oxygen level drops to 82 at night while on his PAP machine. He is awaiting to see if he can do a Pill Cam test, endoscopy. He is again a little low on blood levels, but not low enough for another transfusion. He has no energy (takes iron) can t sleep. What is the connection between his oxygen and low blood levels?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Red blood cells are responsible for transporting oxygen to the different points of the body.

Persons with low blood count (anemia) would have reduced ability to transport oxygen with can lead to fatigue and other symptoms.

Severe sleep apnea can also affect his oxygen levels at night if the airway is compromised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
