What Causes Low Iron Level When Suffering From Colon Cancer?

Hi there, in January 2014 I was diagnosed with colon cancer and had a sub total colectomy (lynch syndrome). In January 2015 I was diagnosed with breast cancer (HER +ve, lest +ve) . At that time I had a mastectomy and reconstruction. I am now halfway through a 12 week session of Paclotaxol and Herceptin. My iron level has just been checked and has come in at 9. My oncologist has put me on iron tablets and has asked lots of questions about the cause. I last had a colonoscopy in November 2014 and that was all clear. There were a couple of enlarged lymph nodes near the join but my colorectal surgeon was not concerned. I am getting pretty stressed wondering if there may be something going on and would appreciate your advice on how to handle this. Thanks

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Colon cancer causes iron deficiency when there is occult (hidden) or overt blood loss with bowel movements.
Since you have been already successfully treated for colon cancer, it is not likely contributing to your symptoms.

It is possible that the low iron is diet related.

I hope this helps
