What Causes Low Blood Pressure Along With Muscle Stiffening?

Hi, my mother has numerous illnesses. She is on dyalisis, she is on a trachea breathing machine, her blood pressure runs low to the point that her heart stops, she has a bed sore on her lower back, she has an infection and now I think her legs and arms are stiffening because they try to straighten them out and she resist that motion. She has only been there for 5 months and I wanna know is that normal.

Hello,

I would need more details to properly analyze your mother's condition. Based on what you have told me, it is possible that due to heart failure, kidney disease (electrolyte imbalance) or an infection, her heart is not pumping blood adequately, which is causing her blood pressure to remain low. The long duration of staying immobile, is likely to have caused the bed sores.

Stiffness in the muscles is common in individuals who have been immobile for long durations. Electrolyte imbalances and/or nerve injury can also add to this. You can discuss passive physiotherapy for her with her treating team. This may help relax her muscles.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
