What Causes Loss Of Voice When Tired?

I often lose my voice when I am tired. I can feel that my vocal chords are a bit strained and I feel as though I have to push out the sounds to speak. My words are very hoarse and if I try to sing my words will cut out entirely. Despite being a bit annoying it is not the biggest inconvenience in the world. My mother is the same way so I wonder at times if it is genetic. However, my question is, if this continued to get worse as I age, will I need some sort of surgery?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Your symptoms of tiring voice, loosing on singling and has to strain indicate that there is a local problem.
I would suggest the following:
- Endoscopy to determine the cause, the position of hte vocal cords and other structures.
CT or MRI of the neck particularly for Larynx to see the area below the vocal cords as this is not seen on endoscopy.

Such problems are not hereditary.

Your main query: if this continued to get worse as I age, will I need some sort of surgery?
With the advent of newer techniques and understanding it is possible that you may get well with medicines or with small corrective surgeries.
I find this answer helpful
