What Causes Loss Of Balance While Walking?

I was walking today and all of a sudden my body started drifting to my left and I could not control it. I had to drop to my knees and then actually laid on the ground to get control. I went to one knee, then sat on a guardrail, then continued my walk for about 20 more minutes with no further problems but what happened?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
welcome to HCM.

If you have faced loss of balance while walking for the first time and for few minutes then there is no need to be worried.

It could be due to vaso-vagal or postural hyportension but if it has occurred once and for few minutes with self recovery then I do not find any abnormality in that.

Or in case your episode repeats or problem becomes persistent then you should see a doctor at the earliest and get evaluated further.

I will suggest you undergo routine blood count, ESR, blood electrolytes, tests for vestibular (balance) system like electronystagmography or rotation tests to diagnose the cause for this balance loose.

Consult physician or ENT specialist for further examination in that case.
