What Causes Loss In The Sense Of Taste?

Few months ago I felt like I lost some of my taste buds. This lasted for few days and I regained it. Now the taste of sweet is so different and wied. Initially I can taste a little bit of the food but the normal taste usually fades away and it usually does not taste normal. It is not just the taste of sweet. The first taste of any food is usually ok but the more (which is not much)I eat the more it becomes tasteless or a taste I can hardly describe. The thought of food is becoming unappetizing even though my sense of smell is intact. I take metformin and Januvia but I ve been on then for a while. Please advise!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Taste impairment with an intact sense of smell can be due to:
-Infections of oral cavity or throat (gingivitis/throat infection/inflammation of taste buds) pharyngitis, dryness of throat and mouth.
- Smoking
- Nutritional deficiencies (vitamin B12, zinc)
- Involvement of central nervous system like Bell's palsy/multiple sclerosis.

Apart from the replacement of vitamin B12 and zinc, treatment of the cause offers good effect. Please consult an ENT specialist or dentist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
