What Causes Localized Pain And Occipital Neuralgia During A Carotid Ultrasound Exam?

Is it abnormal to have localized pain (unilateral) and occipital headache during a carotid ultrasound exam that disappears after transducer removed? I have an enlarged right carotid at the collar bone to mid neck, which is where the pain was. I also have Marfan Syndrome, with slightly dilated ascending & transverse (arch) aorta, LVH (mild), leaky valves (mild), severe resistant HTN for which I take 6 bp-related meds.

Hi
Thanks for posting on HCM
Pain during the procedure may not be linked to your underlying medical conditions. The neck is a region with well coordinated network of vertebrae, muscles and nerves. When any of the nerves is compressed, the effect will be felt to all the parts of the body to which the nerve leads and may radiate to head.Your symptom may have been linked to compression from the transducer. Also, compression on the carotid may interfere with smooth flow of blood to the brain and may manifest with a headache. It is not a cause for concern anyway since it was just during the procedure.I will however advise you have your BP under control and get regular checks by your Doctor.
Hope my answer will clear your doubts
Best regards
