What Causes Lips, Arms And Legs Of A Toddler To Turn Blue And Cold?

my grand daughter turned blue and cold today - lips arms and legs -- she is two and a half, was at day care, happened while eating, no choking ... she has reactive airway but not coughing or wheezing -- this lasted a few minutes - the care taker did not call 911 - any thoughts about this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Blue discoloration of lips, arms and legs may be due to lack of oxygenated blood supply to the affected organs in toddlers. It is called acrocyanosis and generally it is harmless and comes suddenly. Exposure to cold, taking spicy food etc., may precipitate an episode of this type of cyanosis.

If it is not accompanied by respiratory distress, violent coughing, wheezing, excessive sweating or fainting etc., then, it is not an emergency. However, a proper examination afterward by a pediatrician is a must to rule out any serious condition of heart and lungs as well as presence of any abnormal blood condition like presence of atypical hemoglobin particularly hemoglobin S (sickle cell anemia).

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
