What Causes Lingering Cough With Sharp Pain Shooting Through In My Jaw?

I am just recovering from an upper respiratory infection. Lasted about 2 weeks. Lots of thick/gray-green drainage and significant cough. Now at end of this .... I have a lingering cough that causes sharp pain that shoots through in my jaw with each coughing spell. Why am I experiencing this pain ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, it can be due to impending chest infection or muscle spasm after repeated coughing bouts. I suggest you should do a chest X-ray and EKG to rule out any drug-related side effects causing such symptoms.

Sputum culture and sensitivity may also be needed along with gram staining.

Antibiotics may be needed along with antihistamines and expectorant to help with the symptoms. Meanwhile, OTC analgesics like acetaminophen can be continued for symptomatic relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
