What Causes Light Headaches In A Child?

My 9 year old daughter has been suffering from a light headache now for about 3 weeks. She complains that running tends to start it. She is in good health, slim and plays sport. She says the pain is at the front of her head. She doesnt have fever but had a cold about 3 weeks ago. Doesnt have blocked nose but nose is a bit runny and She is sneazing occasionally.

Hello,

The following might be probable causes of your daughter's headache:
1) Chronic sinus infection
2) Viral cold
3) Eye refractive errors
4) Deviated nasal septum
5) Nasal spur or nasal polyp
6) Very rarely any tumors in brain

My recommendations are as follows:
1) First rule out it's due to any change in power of eyes by getting tested by an ophthalmologist or optometrist.
2) Then if everything is ok, we must rule out nose and related causes like sinusitis, nasal polyp etc., by meeting an ENT surgeon.
3) If everything is ok there, then you may need to take her to a physician or a neurologist to rule out other brain causes like tumors etc., by a CT scan.

So, for this, your daughter needs an in person clinical examination and correct diagnosis for appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
