What Causes Leg Pain Few Months After Back Surgery?

What causes legs to hurt like cramps all the time. I have had back surgery in the last two months but they hurt before the surgery. My potassium was low when I went into hospital so they gave me some in liquid form. I take a water pill because if I don t i swell real bad. This is more like bone ache. Can you tell me what may be causing this because it keeps me awake. I take 2 (200 mg) pils of potassium per day. 1 at bedtime and 1 in the morning.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Possible causes are neuropathic pain due to nerve root irritation after the back surgery. Peripheral vascular disease can also cause similar symptoms due to decreased blood flow to the legs. Drugs like gabapentin will be effective.

You can go for avascular Doppler to rule out vascular occlusive disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
