What Causes Left Arm Numbness, Pain In Back And Through Right Arm?

Hi! I have a herniated C7 disc which became very painful in Novemebr 2014. I sought medical attention at that time. MRI was preformed and verified a broadband herniated disc. It was suggested that I have surgery to replace the disc with a artificial one. To date I have not taken the surgery option. I have had pain in my back and down my right arm with some slight pain and numbness in my left arm. The pain was severe November and December and bothersome at times since. I have lost muscle and strength in my right tricep and some in my left. My main question is can I restore the muscle in my triceps? second question would be is surgery absolutely necessary ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I think surgery is absolutely needed in your case, otherwise the symptoms of nerve pressure due to herniated disc may increase (These seem to be increasing already). The pressure on the adjoining vertebrae may aggravate your problem. The symptoms of your disease will definitely improve including muscle strength. However, the duration taken for recovery and extent of recovery cannot be predicted before hand. It may vary case to case depending on the duration and extent of disease besides presence of any co-presenting disease and the general health of the patient.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
