What Causes Large And Blue Veins Under Tongue?

Hi! I am 77 years old and I have been told my health is exceptionally good for my age. But at different times, each side of my tongue has become red and sensitive. In the past, my dentist has checked it and found nothing abnormal, except possibly a sharp point on a one of my lower molars, which he has filed down a little. I m not sure that has helped, but the sensitivity usually clears up in a few days. But a few minutes ago, I happened to look under my tongue and panicked when I noticed how large and blue the veins were. I know my ankles sometimes swell due to age related thinning of my veins, but am afraid to think of what the swollen sublingual veins might mean. If it matters, I m not on any prescribed meds and the only dietary supplements I take are Vitamin D and fish oil. I also clench my teeth while sleeping, and sometimes wonder if I m also biting the side of my tongue, but my dentist has never been alarmed by what ehe sees.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern about your health.
There is nothing to panic about .
The condition you describe in your concern is perfectly normal . There are lots blue vessels under your tongue which actually contains oxygenated blood that’s why they are blue . This is the reason why the medicines we use to take sublingually absorbed so quickly . we have lot of blood supply under the tongue . And your dentist did right thing by filling the sharp end on your molar.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
