What Causes Large Amount Of Mucous Expulsion?

My 88 year old mother is expelling a large amount of mucous, not vomiting stomach contents but mucous. This happened one time before a year ago. We spent 3 hours in the emergency room and the doctor said it s a spasm ... from I can t remember where. Is this a medical emergency? It seems to have slowed down it was happening for about 15 minutes?

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Mucous expulsion is through acts of coughing and is usually from the respiratory system.
It usually occurs when the mucus producing cells in the respiratory tract gets irritated in response to allergy or infection or foreign body.
Its an emergency as excess mucus production can block the respiratory tree at various places resulting in reduced oxygen reaching the blood. She will have difficulty in breathing.
She needs to get her mucus aspiration along with treatment with mucolytics. Cause needs to be identified and treated.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
