What Causes Itchy Rashes On The Hands While On Guaifenesin?
My 16 yr old son has taken a total of 3 tsp of Guaifaenisia and Codeine Phosphate Oral Solution USP since 10 am today (it s 8:45 now) for a cough suppresant. (one tsp at a time) He has gotten an itchy rash in the last hour - on his hands, knees, feet, elbows and near shoulder. Is this likely a reaction to this medicine?
Hi. As per your case history your son is probably having urticaria or allergic dermatitis. It is not usually caused by guaifenesin and codeine. My treatment advice is - 1. Avoid fast food and food with artificial colors. 2. Don't take any medication without consulting a doctor. 3. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on affected region twice daily. 4. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine twice daily for 7-10 days. 5. Other treatment options are higher antihistamine like hydroxyzine, oral steroid taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
Thanks. Dr. Harshit bhachech. MBBS, DDVL.
