What Causes Itchy, Hard And Swollen Ankles?

My ankles are hard, swollen and very itchy. I can walk but seemed like my ankles are burning inside. My lower legs are swollen and also very itchy. I ve had these for about 3 months. Yes, I ve seen a doctor but I was referred to see another- vascular surgeon. In the meantime, what can I do to relieve the itchiness? Thank you. Auggie

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have itchy, hard and swollen ankles . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like standing for prolonged periods of time , taking estrogen , antidepressants , blood pressure medications , steroids or NSAIDs , infection in the leg area , venous insufficiency , organ failure like heart , liver and kidney or lymphedema . I would suggest you to consult cardiologist for proper diagnosis once again . Doctor may order heart tests like ECG and complete blood profile . Doctor may prescribe diuretic like frusamide . Doctor may also refer you to gastroenterologist in case of liver problem or nephrologist in case of kidney problems. Keep your legs elevated while lying down lower your salt consumption and avoid standing for long period . Also take anti histamine like benadryl.
