I had a very itchy scalp with little lumps .i was put on betnovate scalp. They turned into scabs very quickly and very painful and the slightest breeze hurt like hell .i was prescribed anti viral and antibiotioc (seemed to be shingles ) .i have horrible scabs on my head is there anything i can put on my head to soften scabs i have some hair loss .i believe the betnovate has added to my problem .can you tell me why it should not be used on shingles please
Hi. As per your case history you are definitely having shingles ( very painful lesions). My treatment advice is - 1. Don't apply betnovate cream as it a steroid formulation. It will exacerbate the infection. 2. Don't scratch the lesions as it may worsen the condition. 3. Apply a mild antibiotic cream like fusiderm cream twice daily on it. Use a mild herbal shampoo. Scabs will fall off on its own. 4. Take antiviral medication like acyclovir 800mg thrice daily for 5 days. 5. Take a NSAID like ibuprofen for pain. 6. Other treatment options are oral tramadol, gabapentin, antibiotics taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
