What Causes Itching Sensation And Redness Inside Eyes?

my 11 year old said his eye was itching and he was rubbing it. In the span of about 10 minutes it started swelling. It s blood shot and the sclera looks like it s got a clear bubble ur blister or maybe a tear on it. Can t tell. He said it does not hurt though. We gave him Benadryl and put warm compresses on it for about an hour now. Swelling is a bit better but the sclera still looks like a blob of clear jelly on that one side. Do we need to head to ER now? Should we wait till morning? What is this? Very scared!

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

If sudden onset, this suggests allergic reaction to some foreign bodies. Continue Benadryl for 48 hours and give him acetaminophen also to reduce discomfort. Leave the eyes undisturbed. Swelling suggest sever subconjunctival edema, and should come down in 1-2 hours. If not, take him to ER.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
