What Causes Itching And Redness In The Lower Arm And Calves?

Good Evening. My 25 yr old son had mild redness and itching on the insides of his lower arms, calves, his sides, forehead and head Thanksgiving night before bed. We have eaten the exact same menu for many years and he has never had an issue before. He has not changed his diet, laundry detergent, soap, shampoo or shaving cream. The next morning he still had symptoms so he took Benedryl. He slept for 4 hours and felt better afterwords. But before he went to bed that night he broke out in hives and the itching was worse. He continued the Benedryl until yesterday when he was so miserable, he went to urgent care. They gave him a Prednisone injection and a script for oral Prednisone. Last night he did not sleep due to the severity of itching. Tonight he has red streaks on his back and arms, and the itching is worse. He states the itching is always worse at night. He is a high school teacher and assistant band director, and leaves for a school band trip tomorrow. The earliest he could get in with an allergy doctor is next Thursday. The only other symptom he has is an uncomfortable, bloated feeling in his stomach that he says he has not previously experienced. He had allergies and asthma when he was youth, but outgrew it all at age 14. He has a history of Pilonidal disease, but is otherwise a healthy young man. He lives in Mobile, AL. Please advise. Thank you! Tracy.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

This does look like an internal issue and not something caused by an external substance (Soap/detergent etc).

This could be Urticaria or hives caused by either food or even medicine. You have to observe his eating patterns and other external irritants.

The best thing you can do now is to give cold compression/ Icing and antihistamines if you have access to them. These allergies generally go away with time. Seeing a physician is necessary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Rutuja, General & Family Physician
