What Causes Irritation Of The Genital Area After Applying Neosporin?

Hi My daughter 3 year old was complaining of pain in urinary area yesterday. While passing urine there is no pain but after that she is crying hysterically. Doctor examined and said that it looks like an insect bite in the vaginal area. Her urinal test report is normal. The doctor gave her citralka syrup and neosporin last night. After this medicine, in the morning she seemed to be ok but after applying neosporin each time she is complaining of pain and is crying a low. Is this possible that Neosporin causes itching? Should something else be given? (She is also undergoing treatment for chest infection and is taking asthalin repsule and augmentin syrup for last 3 days)

Hi,

Based on the history your daughter seems to have developed diaper rash apparently caused by fungal infection due the prescribed antibiotic augmentin form her chest infection. I suggest you to stop using Neosporin and apply cream containing antifungal like clotrimazole or nystatin over the affected area.

Keep the diaper area clean and dry, change diapers often, don't over tighten diapers, rinse your baby's bottom with warm water as part of each diaper change, and if possible give your baby's bottom more time without a diaper.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
