Hi,

In a 28 days menstrual cycle, 9th day from the last day of the last menstrual to the 16th day of the last day of last menstrual period, total 7 days collectively known as danger periods. Any woman can become pregnant from unprotected sexual intercourses in the danger period. From 14th to 16th day, total 3 days were your friend's danger periods and any unprotected sexual intercourses can make her pregnant within this time frame. Again, Famila contains ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses. But like other medications this medication has some side effects of its own. It may cause missed, delayed or irregular periods, spotting or breakthrough bleeding between periods while taking this medication, especially during the first few months of use. If any woman has doubt for becoming pregnant, then she can undergo urine for pregnancy test, 7 days after the next missed period or consult her gynecologist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Family is a contraceptive used for cyclical regular intake to prevent pregnancy. It is not to be used as an emergency contraceptive after sex. The irregular bleeding is due to irregular and insufficient used of the medicine. The pills are to be started on 5th day of period and should be taken regularly at fixed time of day for 28 days and then stop for periods to start. This is to be continued till you don't want an issue.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale, General & Family Physician
