What Causes Irregular Heartbeats In An Elderly Person?

I am a 70 year old female with an irregular heartbeat. My diagnosis is premature atrial contractions and ventricular premature beats. I am currently taking 150 mg of Metropolol ER succinctness daily. Lately I have been experiencing more frequent palpitations. A nurse practitioner has prescribed Propafenone 150 mg. To be taken 3 times daily. I have had a bad reaction to Flecainide years ago and now am afraid to take this new drug. I live 30 minutes from the nearest hospital and would not be monitored if I start Propafenone. Is this safe?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is understandable to concern re any new medication. Propafenone like all meds can cause side effects but the effects occur in the minority. The most common side effects are unusual taste and dizziness- these can occur in up to 11 % of persons.

The other effects such as constipation, fatigue or weakness occur in less 8% of persons who use this medication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
