What Causes Irregular Heart Beat?

I'm 63 years old, 150 pounds and have a slow irregular heart beat. Sometimes it is more irregular than other times. When the heart skips a beat it feels like a flutter. After exercise it is especially irregular. I also have a very mild mitral valve prolapse that doesn't cause a murmur.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

After going through your medical details I understand your concern and I would like to tell you that common causes of palpitations are anemia, nutritional deficiencies or dehydration . But considering your existing cardiac disease palpitations can be due to cardiac arrhythmia which needs proper evaluation. Kindly get an ECG, Echocardiography and. Holter monitoring ( ambulatory ECG monitoring) for minimum 48 hour and consult a cardiologist for physical evaluation and further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
