What Causes Involuntary Smiling?

I find myself smiling whether I am walking in the street, am with others or alone watching TV. At the beginning I was not aware of it but then people started to smile at me in return occasionally a person or a pedestrian look at me with anger or as if something is odd with me. What could be causing that.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Welcome to HCM.

Thanks for your query. This involuntary smiling could be due to involuntary orbicularis oris muscles or twitching of muscles.

The twitching is commonly seen in smaller muscles like muscles of face.

Such twitches are due to stimulated excitement of the nerve supplying that muscle.

This kind of auto-stimulation is due to weakness in the nerve leading to defective conduction and defective firing.

It is a very common condition and is self limiting .Most of times it disappears when neglected or on its own within 4 or 6 weeks.

Taking Multivitamin supplements containing Vitaimn B12 (Cobalamine) helps faster recovery.

If such twitches stay for long more than 2 to 3 months or so then there would be a need for you to consult a neurologist to find out the underlying cause after examining in detail.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards,
I find this answer helpful
