What Causes Intermenstrual Bleeding?

Hello, I have had my mirena for almost two years now and have had no significant problems. Well, for the past few months i have had my period like 3 times each month... Each time with cramps, as if i am getting my period, although it is very light...and now the blood is brown. Every month before this started happening, i had my period once per month and very very light. I am concerned that i could be either pregnant or that the mirena has moved. Is this normal?

Hi,

Mirena intrauterine device or IUD contains levonorgestel, a female natural sex hormone called progesterone that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses for 7 years. But, women using a hormonal intrauterine device or IUD like Mirena may experience intermenstrual bleeding and spotting or breakthrough bleeding, abdominal or pelvic cramps, back pain etc.

These side effects are usually noticed for 3-6 months after insertion of IUD. But, if you are still bleeding frequently along with cramps at 6 months or more, then you should inform your doctor who placed your IUD. Because, sometimes the Mirena IUD can move from its actual position which is known as expulsion and complete or partial expulsion may cause bleeding or pain or both.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
