What Causes Intense Chest Pain Om Eating Something Hot?

At the weekend I warmed up some food and stupidly had a bite only to realise it was too hot. Instead of spitting it out I swallowed it and had intense chest pains as it felt like burning inside, I also found it extremely hard to breath for a few seconds. Now everytime I eat something hot (but not overly hot) I have that intense chest pain again. Should I see a doctor?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to Health Care Magic.
I understand your concern. I am Dr Alok Sinha, MD Psychiatry from India. I will try to help you with best of my effort.

You had a very bad experience recently causing significant suffering (severe pain and burning sensation in chest).
Now you are having the fear of having hot food in your inner mind, although you may not be aware of it.

It appears that your symptoms are happening in the background of your past traumatic experience. You relive these symptoms due to recall of this bad experience. Hot food is a triggering factor for your reliving experience.

If a person like you comes to me I suggest them desensitization technique. In this technique a person has to gradually expose himself to higher degree of threat (in your case simply it is having try luke warm food for few weeks then gradually trying hotter foods over next few months). This process is slow but curing. You may also consult a psychologist for further therapy.

Hope this answers your questions.
I wish you all the best.
