Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My six years old grandson has not been sleeping at night hardly at all this week. The school calls his mom to come get him because he is not alert in class. Last night he didn t sleep at all...I am keeping him at home today. Around lunch he crashed, it s been three hours and I can t keep him awake. He has never had this problem before. My question is...Will it be ok to give him melatonin 3mg before bed time to help him rest better?? What could cause this?? Should we be concerned and take him to see the doctor???
HI...there could be many reasons for day time sleepiness, but the most common in children in obesity and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome which occurs due to inadequate sleep at night due to obesity and they snore a lot. Such children feel very sleepy in the morning and they try to keep up the sleep which they lost at night. If your grandson is obese this could be the cause....otherwise he needs evaluation regarding seizures too. I suggest you take him to a doctor. I do not recommend using Melatonin without ascertaining the cause for day time sleepiness. Regards - Dr. Sumanth
