What Causes Indigestion While Sleeping?

Indigestion, only at night when I lie down to go to sleep after sitting somewhat upright to read. After taking baking soda and burping it goes away and I go to sleep. I have a history of heart disease, but when I exercise or walk (uphill), there are no symptoms.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

It appears as though you could be suffering from symptoms of acid reflux. This results from a weakened or poorly functioning upper esophageal sphincter, and usually requires simple treatment with the help of medications like omeprazole, ranitidine, etc.

Only in severe cases do we choose a minor surgical procedure wherein we inject medications directly into the sphincter to help it function better. Please do consult your doctor for a 24 -hour acid monitoring.

Best wishes.
