What Causes Indigestion And Cough After Inhaling Bleach Fumes?

Hi. Yesterday I poured bleach down the toilet then 5 mins later poured harpic toilet cleaner forgetting I d already put bleach down. Started scrubbing and the gases made me choke and feel sick. I couldn t stop coughing I couk even speak so I went straight to the doctors. He said my throat was red which was making me cough. Checked my lungs and they were ok. Told me to drink honey and lemon and take piriton as my eyes were swollen too. Today the cough has gone and I can talk but my chest hurts kind of feels like indigestion and has got worse as the day has gone on. Any advice? Thanks kelly

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of indigestion and cough after inhaling bleach fumes which occur mainly due to allergic response/ reaction due to volatile bleach contents , which can be poisonous. As these fumes are volatile they can cause respiratory problem due to which your throat is burning along with nervous problem which breathing problems and pain in chest and throat. Burning sensation in eyes can also occur because of contact infection due to volatile nature of fumes. I would suggest you to consult doctor for proper examination without any delay and rule out condition like poisoning. Doctor may prescribe anti emetic drug to exhale contents, antihistamine , steroid injection , analgesic. Ranitidine is effective for this. Use water based eye drops. For now take some fresh air and drink plenty of water and milk which will be helpful .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
