What Causes Incoherency And Lack Of Appetite After Bypass Surgery?

My father is 78 and had a triple bypass last Wednesday. They put a balloon pump in on Tuesday to help his heart. He came out of the surgery fine and his vitals are good, but he isn't coherent, sleeps constantly and won't eat. He doesn't seem to know that I'm there. Concerned

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your father's symptoms could be related to different possible causes:

- prolonged effects of anesthesia
- possible stroke
- confusion or delirium after surgery.

That is why I would recommend consulting with a neurologist for a careful physical exam. A brain CT scan may be needed to exclude possible stroke.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
