General & Family Physician 's  Response
Inability to sit or stand in old age is due to general debility that is generalised weakness of body. Only fluid diet and inability to eat regular food is the reason for this weakness.
Also As we age our muscles and their nerve supply start to degenerate and we loose power and control over them. this is a normal phenomenon and is seen in all individuals, though the age of onset and severity of this weakness may be different in different individuals.
It takes more power to sit or stand as it requires our muscles to act against gravity while on bed there is no gravity acting so it is a lot easier to move hands and legs to the side.
Sometimes a brain injury due to either loss of blood supply due to a clot or due to bleeding inside the skull can result in complete loss of muscle power called as paralysis and can affect any or all limbs. this can be diagnosed by CT scan or MRI.
