What Causes Imbalance In An Elderly Person While On Looz Syrup?

My consultant prescribed LOOZE Syrup, l5mg mornings and 15.mg.before going to bed.( ( Initially he prescriibed 30 mg. evenings) but this did not work at all I taking this am. pm.dosage for approx. 1 week and have had a fair result with passing stools. However for the last two days when I have woken up after my night s sleep I have felt really ill, plus my balance is all over the place and I have the weirdest dreams. My question is do you think the Looze could be related to this development? I am 91 years of age; have osteoporosis and in the past had three vertebral fractures. I also have cirrhosis of the liver, caused by medication. I do not expect magical cures at my age but wish to have as some quality of life - if this is possible. I as born in England and lived there for most of my life. For the last three years I have lived with my daughter south India. I have a very helpful, considerate consultanr but have to travel some 8km to see him and it is not easy to reach him by phone; mainly caused by language problems. His English is excellent but although staff are as helpful as they can be there are inevitably language difficulties in making contact with him. I shall be most grateful for any suggestions.

Internal Medicine Specialist 's  Response
hello sir, this is Dr Suresh. lactulose can not be the cause of bad dreams but it can cause electrolyte disturbances like low potassium, which can cause terrible weakness along with gait problems. being a cirrhotic, you must also check if any other medication is causing these problems like a diuretic (low potassium) or beta blockers (bizarre dreams) which are frequently used in cirrhosis. elevated toxins in the blood due to liver disease can also cause these problems, irrespective of the medication you are using. a detailed check by your doctor should help you. wish you good luck.
