What Causes Hyperlipidemia?

This is the first time I have seen Hyperlipidemia as a part of my diagnosis from the doctor. I have Type 2 Diabetes which I just cannot seem to find the right medication without insulin. I just don t want the insulin because in the long run I cannot afford the doughnut hole. I just wanted to know what hyperlipidemia is? Can you help me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

First of all, hyperlipidemia may be due to diabetes. In the studies conducted for diabetes, results show that diabetes and hypertriglyceridemia ( triglycerides are lipids like cholesterol) are common together. If you control your sugar levels, lipid levels will be decreased automatically.

The second thing about hyperlipidemia lipid (cholesterol, triglyceride) is an ester of fatty acid and glycerol. They are insoluble and they cannot be transported to other sites inside the body. So transportation of lipid is done by lipoprotein (LDL, HDL, VLDL, IDL). Lipid is a good source of energy. It is a structural component of our cell wall and steroid and sex hormones are made from this lipid.

If Lipid level increases particularly cholesterol it is deposited in arteries wall, here they form plaques and narrows arteries inside. So blood circulation of the organ supplied by that arteries is decreased. If the organ is heart then chances of a heart attack if the organ is brain then stroke. Because of this reasons, lipid levels must be kept under normal levels.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Divyesh Sondarva
