What Causes High Fever And Appetite Loss In A Child?

I have a five year old grandson that has had a temp for over a week ranging from 99.5 to 104.7 last week end. He was taken to the ER and we were told he had a viral infection. No medication given. His temp finally broke, we thought about Wednesday, and has not returned to a normal temp. It is staying around 100 average since then. Today, we took him to the dentist, since he had a tooth capped last year. We thought maybe it was infected since there was a gum boil on it two months ago and has disappeared. The child has no other symptoms other than an occasional stomach ache. Appetite is decreased a bit, but not much. We are lost.

Hello,

Viral infections do not always cause respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms. The most prominent symptom of some viral illnesses can be just a fever. A temperature up to 100 degrees is considered normal in an otherwise healthy child.

A viral infection can last as long as 1-2 weeks. As long as your grandson is acting normally and his appetite and fluid intact are close to normal I believe he is fine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
